Victim Advocate Job Summary:

The Office of the Fayette Commonwealth’s Attorney is hiring a full-time Victim Advocate to provide services to victims of a variety of crimes. We are looking for an experienced Victim Advocate to provide support services to victims of crimes, helping them to cope with the trauma they have experienced and to navigate the criminal justice system. This position works closely with law enforcement personnel and other professionals to ensure that victims receive the assistance they need.

Primary Responsibilities:

• Assess the immediate needs of victims and provide crisis intervention services
• Offer emotional support and provide referrals for ongoing counseling
• Help victims understand their rights within the criminal justice system
• Assist victims file for compensation from the state and other resources
• Provide legal advocacy and accompaniment to criminal justice proceedings
• Educate victims about the criminal justice process and their rights
• Maintain accurate records and provide case management services
• Work closely with law enforcement personnel and other professionals to ensure victims receive the assistance they need
• Advocacy throughout the Circuit Court criminal process:
• Informing survivors of their rights and options
• assisting with the Crime Victim Compensation Application
• gathering restitution information
• Facilitating communication with the prosecutor
• Attending trials and other hearings with survivors
• Assisting with Victim Impact Statements
• Safety Planning
• Referrals to outside agencies for resources
• Collaboration with partner agencies
• Tracking Data and fulfilling grant reporting requirements

Minimum Qualifications:

• Bachelor’s degree in a related field, such as social work, psychology, or criminal justice
• Knowledge of the criminal justice system and victim rights
• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
• Able to maintain confidentiality
• Able to work with individuals from diverse cultures, backgrounds, and socioeconomic levels
• Able to work independently and as part of a team
• Able to handle emergency situations in a calm and professional manner
• Proficient with computer programs such as Microsoft Office and case management software
• Bachelor’s Degree in a human services field (social work, psychology, criminal justice, etc.)
• Experience in human services or the court system
